According to Search Engine Land, Google’s March 2025 update has seen more AI Overviews appear across entertainment, restaurant and travel sectors. Whilst this isn’t a surprise, it does show that AI Overviews are only going to become more dominant in more sectors, and if they’re not forming part of your SEO strategy for 2025 then you’re missing a trick.
What are AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries that appear at the top of the search results page. Charitably, they aim to answer a user’s question quickly with information taken from authoritative websites. Cynically, they stop a user clicking through to anywhere and keep them on Google instead.
Why should you care?
If you’re a business owner who relies to any extent on search engine traffic, you’re likely to be impacted by this new search format. If you care at all about the amount of traffic you get or how you appear on the search results page, you should be considering how to best optimise your site for AI Overviews whilst still retaining as much value as possible for the end user.
